AMD is gearing up to release a new version of its Radeon RX 9070 GRE graphics card, this time featuring 16GB of VRAM. According to recent reports, the upgraded model is expected to debut between September and October, giving gamers and creators more memory headroom in the midrange segment.

The current RX 9070 GRE, introduced earlier this year, launched with 12GB of GDDR6 VRAM on a 192-bit memory bus. Built around the Navi 48 GPU, it offers 48 compute units and 3,072 stream processors while drawing 220 watts of power. In performance tests, it proved to be a strong rival to NVIDIA’s RTX 5070, often delivering similar or slightly better results in gaming benchmarks.

The upcoming 16GB version will take things a step further by expanding to a 256-bit memory bus, ensuring that the additional VRAM can be fully utilized through increased bandwidth. While AMD has not confirmed changes to other specifications such as clock speeds or compute units, the memory upgrade alone positions the card as a stronger option for high-resolution gaming, content creation, and workloads that benefit from larger memory pools.

A launch in the fall would be well-timed for the holiday season, placing the RX 9070 GRE 16GB directly against NVIDIA’s next wave of RTX 50 Super cards and Intel’s upcoming Battlemage lineup. With modern games pushing VRAM requirements higher than ever, this move could help AMD secure a stronger foothold in the competitive midrange market.

If priced aggressively, the 16GB RX 9070 GRE could fill an important gap between the standard RX 9070 GRE and the higher-end RX 9070 XT, offering buyers a balance of performance, efficiency, and future-ready memory capacity. As AMD refines its GPU lineup, this refreshed card has the potential to be one of the standout midrange choices of late 2025.
